Our dedicated and compassionate employees are driven by a common mission: To deliver the cures of tomorrow to the people who need them today. The Associate Vice President, Philanthropy (AVP) manages a dynamic portfolio of approximately 30–50 of City of Hope’s most financially capable donors and prospects, with a focus on individuals capable of making principal gifts and above within the regional market. This role serves as both a senior fundraising professional and relationship builder, connecting donors with Office of Philanthropy leadership, faculty, and administrative leaders to advance City of Hope’s mission.

The AVP develops highly personalized cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship strategies for donors and prospects while working collaboratively across regional markets and centralized philanthropy functions. This role ensures that donor proposals, stewardship reports, and communications reflect the highest standards of excellence and personalization.

In addition to maintaining an active portfolio, the AVP provides leadership and mentorship to frontline fundraising staff and partners with institutional leadership to align philanthropic opportunities with City of Hope’s strategic priorities.

As a successful candidate, you will: 

Lead fundraising strategy and donor engagement

• Manage a portfolio of approximately 30–50 high-capacity donors and prospects capable of making major and principal gifts.

• Identify, cultivate, and solicit transformational gifts in support of City of Hope priorities.

• Develop customized cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship strategies tailored to individual donor interests and philanthropic goals.

• Maintain strong, long-term relationships with past and prospective donors to maximize philanthropic engagement and impact.

• Utilize data and analytics to inform donor strategies and identify new opportunities for philanthropic support.

• Craft and oversee development of donor communications including proposals, briefings, stewardship reports, and strategic materials.

• Develop and negotiate complex gift agreements in collaboration with internal and external partners when appropriate.

• Participate in strategy review sessions with philanthropy colleagues to ensure a coordinated and effective donor experience.

Serve as a strategic partner and institutional ambassador

• Build strong partnerships with faculty, administrators, and Office of Philanthropy leadership to advance fundraising initiatives.

• Represent the Office of Philanthropy internally and externally with professionalism and integrity.

• Serve as a connector between donors and institutional leadership, including regional leaders when appropriate.

• Remain current on City of Hope research, clinical, and programmatic priorities to effectively align donor interests with funding opportunities.

• Support colleagues across the Office of Philanthropy in advancing shared fundraising goals.

Provide leadership and mentorship

• Supervise, mentor, and coach frontline fundraising staff, faculty partnership officers, and administrative support staff.

• Foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, and professional development.

• Conduct regular performance evaluations and work with Office of Philanthropy leadership on staff development and advancement.

• Assist with recruitment, selection, onboarding, and training of new staff members. 

Your qualifications should include: 

• Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field required.

• 10 years of progressive experience in development or philanthropy, with a strong emphasis on major and principal gifts fundraising.

• 5 years of leadership experience managing teams and engaging key constituencies.

• Demonstrated success cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding high-capacity donors.

• Experience developing complex fundraising strategies and personalized donor engagement plans.

• Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, including experience developing proposals, briefing materials, and donor communications.

• Ability to understand and communicate complex scientific or medical concepts to diverse audiences.

• Proven ability to build strong partnerships with institutional leaders, faculty, volunteers, and donors.
