Pay Rate: $103.19 - $172.33 per hour

The Deputy General Counsel, Litigation, serves as a key member of the City of Hope national system and plays a critical leadership role in managing the organization’s litigation and dispute portfolio. Reporting to the Vice President of Labor & Employment and Litigation, this position oversees a broad range of legal matters including employment, professional liability, general liability, commercial disputes, construction, and intellectual property. This leader partners closely with cross-functional teams, provides strategic legal counsel, and supervises outside counsel while driving litigation strategy and ensuring effective resolution of claims and disputes.
As a successful candidate, you will:
- Provide legal counsel and lead all aspects of claims, disputes, charges, and litigation across the organization
- Develop and execute litigation strategies to achieve favorable outcomes
- Manage and oversee outside counsel, ensuring alignment with organizational objectives and budgets
- Respond to pre-litigation demands and negotiate resolutions of claims
- Represent City of Hope in administrative hearings and court proceedings, including trials
- Draft and review legal documents including pleadings, motions, discovery, and settlement agreements
- Lead and support investigations related to potential legal or policy violations in collaboration with internal partners
- Monitor and analyze litigation trends, risks, budgets, and case outcomes
- Provide guidance on risk management and compliance matters across the organization
- Partner with internal stakeholders to provide strategic legal advice and support business objectives
Your qualifications should include:
- J.D. from an accredited law school
- 7–10 years of recent, broad litigation experience in a law firm, in-house, or similar setting
- Proven experience managing complex litigation matters from start to resolution
- Experience overseeing and managing outside counsel
- Strong knowledge of administrative, state, and federal court processes, civil procedure, and rules of evidence
- Experience with class and representative actions
- Active member in good standing of a U.S. State Bar (California preferred)
- Excellent legal writing, analytical, and communication skills
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage a high-volume, fast-paced workload
- Strategic mindset with high integrity, sound judgment, and collaborative approach
